More about Batish Institute of Indian Music and Fine Arts

"Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire!" Y. B Keats. Welcome to the Indian music learning page. It is dedicated to the music and fine arts as created and taught by the Batish Gharana / Family of Patiala, India. Our Guruji is Pandit Shiv Dayal Batish whose works you willl learn here. Followed by the teaching of his son Pandit Ashwin Kumar Batish and his grand son Shri Keshav Ram Batish.

The Batish family hails from the Punjab region of North India. Pandit Shiv Dayal ji learned Indian music from his guruji Chandan Ram Charan of Patiala. Guru Charan ji was a highly respected music composer and teacher. Many of his songs were regularly sung and presented live in concert by some of the musicians of the era including such luminaries as Abdul Aziz Khan, Pandit Raman ji, Pandit Shiv Dyala Batish ji, Saigal et al.

The Batish Gharana was formed in the early 70s by Pandit Shiv Dayal Batish ji when he started teaching at the University of California in Santa Cruz California. From 1970 to 2006 he and his song Pandit Ashwin Kumar ji, worked on creating some of the greatest educational writings and compositions that are presently undergoing final editing to be presented tot he world of Indian music.

These works encompass both styles of present day classical Indian music raga forms; the Carnatic and the Hindustani.
