Why save honeybees?

If the honey bee disappears we will lose much of our world food supply.

We should help save honey bees because even though grains do not require honey bees to flourish, virtually all of our non-grain foods are dependent on honey bee pollination. Worldwide, there are 90 different food plants that depend almost exclusively on the honey bee. In the USA, honey bees are considered critical pollinators of many fruits, nuts, and vegetables. Your own diet will be changed dramatically if we lose our honey bees.

Why not exterminate?

Honeybees may establish a nest inside the wall of the house or other building causing a problem, a health hazard, and a serious danger to the structure. Honey bees can only sting once and then they die, so they are reluctant to sting unless attacked.

Honey bee colonies in wall or attic voids are a much more serious problem than yellow jacket wasps. Yellow jacket colonies are annual, and wasps will disappear in the winter with or without treatment. Honey bee nests may last for many years without treatment, and will contain honey stored inside the walls. The honey can ruin walls and ceilings if it is not removed. The dead bees will also rot and smell.

Combs inside buildings should be removed to avoid problems with honey fermenting inside the walls, as well as pest problems. Also, removal will deter from attracting bee swarms in the future.
