Harmonica playing for individuals with COPD and other chronic lung diseases has been in existence for some time. Harmonica materials and methods for these groups, however, have most often been inconsistent and piecemeal. There is no central location for lung health professionals to consult with one another about harmonica therapy, and no pre-packaged starter kits. Programs are often dependent on a single leader hearing about harmonica playing for chronic lung disease through work-of-mouth. If the leader goes to another job, moves, or is otherwise unable to continue, the program is usually dropped.
Most towns, or cities, have a place where music education is offered. With that in mind, it only makes sense to combine the efforts of music educators with that of individuals within the pulmonary fields.
