Bell Church was organized in 1866 at the home of William Gillespie on South Turkey Creek immediately after the Civil War. Worship services were held once a month and were led by a Methodist Circuit Rider, Rev. Francis Fanning. Bell Church held worship services in the Union Church building on Turkey Creek campground from 1872 until some years later when the congregation built a log building.
Later a frame building was built from saw milled lumber. That building was located across the road from the present church building.
Construction on the current building began in 1927 and was dedicated in late summer of 1928. An educational building housing Sunday School classes and new restrooms was later added.
The church was named “Bell” because it was the first church in the community to have a bell to ring for services.
Today, we still proudly ring that bell to summon the beginning of our Sunday worship services!
