Beltzville Dam

Beltzville Dam and Reservoir were authorized for construction by Congress as part of a Delaware River Basin Flood Control Plan in 1962. The project is multi-purpose, providing flood control, water supply, and recreational capabilities.

The dam and reservoir were constructed by the Philadelphia District, Corps of Engineers, and construction was completed in 1971. Since that time, it has become a heavily visited water resource project.

The dam itself is an earth fill, impervious core with random fill. The outlet works consist of a concrete circular conduit, 7 ft. in diameter, 1263 ft long, 2 sets of flood control gates and 1 water quality control gate. The reservoir is ~ 7 miles long, 947 acres, with a drainage area of 96.3 square miles. The reservoir reaches maximum depths around 125ft. The dam is located in Lehighton PA and controls water flow on the Pohopoco Creek, a tributary to the Lehigh River.
