The Bend in the River is a partnership between Salt Lake City and the Lowell Bennion Community Service Center at the University of Utah. It is an ecological preservation site designed to preserve the natural landscape of the state of Utah. The two-acre greenspace is situated along the Jordan River on the west side of Salt Lake City. Though city-owned, the Bend in the River is managed by student volunteers from the University of Utah in conjunction with city officials.
Several projects are set up at the Bend in the River throughout the year, including the Bennion Center's Legacy of Lowell Community Service Day during the U's homecoming week and a large Earth Day event. Student and community volunteers come out to support the environment and provide a unique landscape in downtown Salt Lake.
Though these projects are set up, the Bend in the River is also available for individual groups to volunteer or for educational purposes. It is important to have regular maintenance done at the Bend in the River, including weeding and watering, so we are always looking for people who are interested in regular volunteering or individual projects.
