1900’s - Big State began as a haberdashery - “a men’s outfitter”.
1948 - Gus Crassons Jr. transformed Big State into a drug store.
1951 - Clay Burney was hired as head pharmacist and store manager. He and his wife Jean later became part owners of Big State Drug.
1992 - The Burney’s sold the business to Brian and Stacy Smith.
2014 - The Smith’s closed Big State in May. Rick & Susan Fairless buy the business in June from the building owners, Dan & Elaine Niemeier.
Today - With a full exterior & interior remodel, Big State Fountain Grill was opened on September 8, 2014. Rick & Susan Fairless are lifelong Irving residents and also own the world famous motorcycle destination - Strokers Dallas ( incl. Strokers Ice House Bar & Grill, Strokers Ink, RF Custom Parts).
“Susan & I are very proud to keep this Irving tradition alive for future generations to enjoy. I am a 2nd generation Irvingite & Sue is a 5th generation Irvingite whose great-great grandpa was one of the original Irving pioneers. We were devastated when Big State Drug closed their doors so we decided to buy it with our hearts and not our heads. We are very happy we did!! Thank y’all for visiting Big State Fountain Grill and let us know what we can do to better serve you!” Rick & Susan Fairless
