Look for deer and wild turkeys. 10-15 minutes away: gallery hop, catch trout in downtown Bakersville , go rafting, buy gourmet goat cheeses at Oak Moon Creamery. 20-30 minutes away: drive the Blue Ridge Parkway, go gem mining, hike the Appalachian Trail, go fly fishing with Rivers Edge Outfitters, visit Penland Gallery & take a tour of Penland School of Craft, visit TRAC Gallery, & artist studios, go golfing. What you can’t do: easily connect to work and other people you need a vacation from.
