More about Bodyguard Sports Medicine

I am the first primary care sports medicine physician in Sumner County. My training included a residency in Family Medicine, during which I focused on sports medicine and was the team doctor for a large high school in South Bend, Indiana. My fellowship training was done with the University of Notre Dame as one of the team physicians. I treat all muscle, joint, ligament injuries including osteoarthritis, sprains, strains and simple fractures. I also specialize in concussion management. To help with diagnoses I utilize my physical exam, x-rays, musculoskeletal ultrasound and MRI's.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound is still quite new to the Sports Medicine world. It is used to visualize muscles, ligaments, tendons and can help in making the correct diagnosis. It can sometimes prevent needing expensive testing like MRI scans. I use this regularly as part of a normal office visit so my patients can see what is causing the problem. It is also very helpful in treating certain problems because I can localize where the issue is and inject right at that spot using the ultrasound for guidance. I use it for most of my injections to ensure we put the medication where it is supposed to be. There are other minimally invasive treatments that can be done using ultrasound for common tendon problems like tennis elbow and plantar fasciitis.

I specialize in the treatment of concussions. I have worked with Sumner Regional Medical Center to implement baseline testing for concussions in the Sumner, Macon and Trousdale County High Schools. We have also expanded this to cover middle school football athletes throughout Sumner County. This testing is the same testing I used as a Team Physician at Notre Dame. It helps me to ensure that an athlete's brain is back to it's normal or baseline function before we return them to play. We have worked hard to implement concussion protocols throughout all of our area middle and high schools to protect these young men and women.

Although the name implies that I only work with athletes, this is not the case. I manage osteoarthritis, joint pains, muscle strains or pains, broken bones in both young and old, athlete or non-athletic patients. I offer same day and even walk in appointments which may save you a visit to the urgent care who will need to send you to a specialist anyways. We can do it all in one place. I can place stitches, get X-rays, cast and manage broken bones, coordinate physical therapy all in our office. We also have MRI on site with a radiologist who I work closely with to discuss your case and review your X-rays or MRI scans.

I also work closely with the high school athletic trainers, physical therapists, orthopedic surgeons and primary care doctors in order to coordinate your care effectively and efficiently. By utilizing the latest in non-surgical treatments including the FAST procedure, PRP, and ultrasound guided injections we can work together to get you back to your sport, work or just everyday activities.
