Borscht Corporation

Borscht is a nonprofit with the simple mission to redefine cinema in Miami.

It was formed ten years ago as a response to the lack of local infrastructure and support for filmmakers as a way to empower artists to tell fresh Miami stories.

Since receiving our first grant from the Knight Foundation five years ago Borscht has...“legitimized the once-absurd premise of filmmaking in Miami... spurring a filmmaking boom in South Florida”


by developing and overseeing the creation of dozens of short films, often from first-time filmmakers who are from diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds.

The films had an unprecedented run of success- screening at over 200 festivals worldwide (including six years in a row at Sundance), museums like the Guggenheim and MoMA, garnering millions of online views, appearing on newspaper and magazine covers, and winning dozens of jury and audience awards......

While simultaneously building “the weirdest film festival on the planet,", “Miami's best film festival,", and one of the “25 coolest film festivals in the world” from the ground up in the Borscht Film Festival, a biannual screening of the commissioned work, “reinventing of the concept of the film festival" in the process.

In short, Borscht has “redefined cinema in Miami" and "the world is taking notice," even wondering if “the next great hope of American film is in Florida."

In 2014 Borscht was awarded South Florida Film Critic's Circle's Golden Orange Award for outstanding contribution to film in Florida via “fresh, vital...tireless championing of independent filmmaking." In 2015, CERN and IFP hosted Borscht Retrospectives, and in 2016 another will be hosted at LACMA.
