More about Bowling Green Kentucky Judo / Jujitsu Club www.bowlinggreenjudo.com

Kodokan Judo was founded in 1882 by Dr. Jigoro Kano at the Eishoji Temple near Tokyo, Japan . The practice of Judo found a home in physical education and sport. Sport Judo provided teamwork, which was good for all and also developed the individual. Judo was a complete physical education; not just a game. Although self-defense techniques were included in the training, emphasis was on using the techniques in a holistic manner. Dr. Jigoro Kano is credited with jujitsu's survival of the Meiji Restoration at a time jujitsu was looked down upon in Japan. He took jujitsu and adapted it to the times. His new methodology was called Judo. He combined sport and philosophy into a way of life that contributes to society.

In 1882, Dr. Jigoro Kano (The Father of Judo) made a comprehensive study of several ancient self defense forms and integrated the best of these forms into a sport, which is known as Kodokan Judo. The fundamental physical techniques at the heart of Judo are using the opponent’s body weight against him: in this way, a small fighter can beat a much larger, stronger opponent with the proper strategy, skill and technique. Judo is practiced on mats, and there is no kicking or punching. The key techniques in Judo are throws and grappling, including choke holds, joint locks and arm bars. Judo has a system of belt color ranks, which are designed to recognize a person's degree of competence, knowledge, and leadership in the sport. Judo developed as a sport and was first included in the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. Judo has been a part of the Olympic Games ever since.

Judo is an excellent form of all around exercises that develops strength in body and mind, self-confidence, respect of others, and the importance of trust. Through practice students learn discipline and self-control and are provided with a meaningful way to channel their energies. Judo also teaches relatively easy techniques to master that have real self-defense applications. The students will learn the skills of falling, grappling, throwing, and tournament play. Our program is an excellent way to increase your flexibility, endurance, power and strength, with the added benefits of developing self-confidence, courage, and leadership. The major goal of our program is to provide a positive atmosphere where our students can develop as both recreational and competitive athletes. The ultimate goal in Judo is to develop oneself to the maximum extent possible, always striving for perfection, so that you can contribute something of value to the world.
