Build a Smile

Build a Smile is a project within Medical Outreach of America Foundation.

MOA has helped Guatemalans for many years, bringing surgeons from different specialties to serve the people of Guatemala. From time to time, one or two dentists come along with the team. That's how we discover one of the biggest problems Guatemala faces: many cavities, not enough dentists.

More than 50% of Guatemalans have no access to oral health, they make less than $800 a year.
There are other foundations already building Clinics, and doing a really good job at improving the oral health of Guatemalans, but sadly all they had access to before these was "dental technicians" that would pull their teeth out when they hurt.

So, there is a lot of people lacking many teeth, having problems to eat, and even to smile.

The purpose of this surgery course is to provide a practice platform in live surgery and also review theoretic and didactic knowledge for the participants. All patients are already pre-screen, and have panoramic or CBCT imaging provided to enhance the diagnosis and treatment planning concepts that will be presented in detail.
The program is designed for provide a live surgical experience for each participant with real patients. A thorough review of dental implant surgery and instrumentation necessary to complete procedures of basic to moderate complexity. The goal is for each participant to perform at least ten implants during the course. All treated patients, will be followed-up by our local team, up to the final prosthetic restoration as planned, with absolutely no cost for them. These are people for marginal areas of Guatemala, that otherwise would never have access to dental care, even less for Implant Dentistry, so we the participant team of both instructors and trainees, will gain experience, and the patients will benefit with superb quality dental care.

BUILD A SMILE is a project that has 3 stages:
1. A course open for Dentist to come down to Guatemala to learn how to place implants, practice on real people, under the supervision of experienced dentists.
2. Follow up of the patients by Guatemalan Dentists.
3. Crown placement on the pieces where implants were made.

Our next live implant surgery is from June 15 to June 20th.

The cost of the course is $8,000 and includes:
