C and S Cattle

C&S Cattle was created in 2014 by Charles Sharpe and Sarah Weaver because they saw an unmet need for locally grown beef in the local markets. They combined their love of agriculture, beef cattle, and educating consumers on where their food comes from to create this business. Both grew up on family farms- Charles in Louisa County and Sarah in Madison County. Charles has a degree from Virginia Tech in Applied Agriculture Management, and Sarah has a degree in Animal Science. Charles' family has approximately 75 beef cows and calves and they also raise purebred Angus bulls and heifers. They also grow hay, barley, grain sorghum, and do some custom farming work. Sarah's family has approximately 125 commercial beef cows and calves, a pig farming operation, and grow hay, corn, soybeans, barley, and wheat. Her family also has a successful pork and beef retail business where she first identified there was a need for beef sold in larger quantities other than individual retail packages. 2014 will also be Sarah's 5th year of Sarah's Pumpkin Patch, a pick your own pumpkin patch on her family farm in Madison.

What makes us different?
We do not use growth promoting hormones or unnecessary antibiotics in our animals. Our cattle are on pasture at all times and are fed free-choice grain purchased from local sources. They are also given a free choice supply of hay grown on the farm. We believe that having cattle eat both grass and grain that it enhances the overall flavor in our meat. Giving the cattle grain allows them to build up the marbling in the cuts that makes our beef so melt-in-your-mouth delicious to eat!

What else makes us special?
Charles and Sarah take pride in buying beef cattle off their own family farms. We can tell you exactly where each animal came from, what breed they were, and often who the parents were. So, in supporting us by buying our beef, not only are you supporting our small business, but you are also supporting two more family farms.
We treat our animals humanely. We are quiet and low-key when moving our animals (very important in keeping everyone calm) and spend time in the field with our animals. They are very accustomed to us being out in the field with them.
