CALPIA is a State-operated agency created by Chapter 1549, Statutes of 1982 that provides productive work assignments for thousands of offenders in California's adult correctional institutions. CALPIA operates service, manufacturing, and consumable industries at all 34 California prisons. CALPIA is self-supporting from the sale of its products and services and does not receive an annual appropriation from the Legislature.
CALPIA Reduces Recidivism, Saves Taxpayers’ Money and Increases Public Safety:
The recidivism rate of CALPIA participants is an essential measure of the organization’s success. Former offenders who participated in CALPIA programs are 26-38% less likely to return to prison than the average California offender.
CALPIA provides valuable training and work skills to offenders that allow them to get jobs when they parole. CALPIA’s number one product is an offender who never returns to prison.
