Around 1878, a period just after the Civil War, the African American population in Wichita was small. When 2nd Baptist Church or Calvary Baptist Church was formed there was a period of exodus of African Americans from the South and Wichita's African American population grew from 62 to 246 over a ten year period. Rev. George Woodey presided over the first group of believers in Christ, organized them and was appointed pastor of this church.
