10Ft Ganja Plant

:::::Genre: Reggae, Dub, Roots

If you are reading this then 10Ft Ganja Plant is coming to a stage near you. The elusive group has operated largely beneath a shroud of mystery, making exceedingly rare live appearances.
Drawing influences from the 1970’s golden age of reggae, a deep dedication to vintage sounds creates atmospheric soundscapes, filled with rolling bass, heartbeat drums, lush guitars, and majestic horns. Coming off their 8th release for ROIR, 10Ft Ganja Plant is all about the music. Simple, respectful, good vibes for the kind mind.
Who are 10 Ft. Ganja Plant? They are a dub & roots reggae band shrouded in mystery. They hail from the great Northeast and are rumored to share members with another great reggae group, John Brown’s Body. Their shows are rarely announced or promoted. In fact, like a yeti sighting, they seldom occur. Anyone who has seen them live, or owns one of their albums, can attest to the fact that no other band has captured the 70’s spirit quite like this crew, that 10 Ft. may be the best roots group in America.

Christian Martin (Dirtybird Records, SF)

:::Genre: Tech House, Dirtybird Bass

Since 1995, Christian Martin has been exploring electronic music from one end of the earth to the other; from full-moon parties in the deserts of California to the thumping, dark corners of the London club scene. Christian followed his love for spleen-rattling bass to San Francisco in 2000, where he met up with the now legendary dirtybird crew. The dirtybird BBQ was the brainchild of the four original members " Christian & his brother Justin Martin, and friends Claude VonStroke and Worthy. They had a personal mission to change the landscape of San Francisco house music by throwing an epic free party in the park, based on their new signature sound.

In 2003, with nothing to lose and everything to gain, Christian bought a massive yet necessary sound system on his credit card. This set the standard for a new era of die-hard dedicated DIY producers, all with productions based on heavy bass-lines, smiling faces and dance floor delights.

In 2006, Christian began releasing a steady stream of tracks, first collaborating with Justin under the Martin Brothers alias, as well as Claude VonStroke. The Martin Brothers partnership has produced such hip-hop influenced hits as Duckface, Stoopit, & Dum, as well as remixes for Ed Banger and Fool's Gold. On his own, he's released his own brand of bassy house music on labels such as dirtybird, Trapez, and Anabatic. His low end take on tech house has led to remixes for musical heavyweights such as Chromeo, Underworld, L-Vis 1990, and many more.

Christian's devotion to large scale bass has allowed him to champion the dirtybird sound out of the park and onto giant soundsystems at clubs and festivals worldwide. From Fusion (Germany) to Shambhala (Canada), to Coachella & Symbiosis (US), there's a constant demand for what he describes as bass from the ground up. In San Francisco, Christian is a resident at dirtybird's raucous quarterly party at Mezzanine; and also at Monarch, the newly opened marvel of a club. His new musical alias Leroy Peppers has recently roared to life, offering an even heavier take on hip-hop influenced bass music. Whether it be Leroy or Christian behind the decks, if your hands aren't clapping your ass surely will be.

lespecial

:::Genre: Death Funk, Electronic Fusion, You'll Be Surprised

Born in the woods of Connecticut and raised in the wilds of Boston, lespecial has established themselves as innovators and tastemakers on their own unique trajectory. The aggressive death-funk dance trio explodes with energetic live sets, tapping into a primitive past distorted through the lense of contemporary technology. Coming off the release of their second EP, Ceremony, preceded by Playonbrother Sessions (2011), Jonathan Grusauskas (guitar/keys/trumpet), Luke Bemand (bass guitar) and Rory Dolan (drums) ignore convention, instead amalgamating the familiar styles of Afro-Latin rhythmic traditions, Hip Hop, Funk and Metal into a singular sound that dexterously transforms during their live sets and over the course of their studio albums. As Ben Weiss of Relix Magazine puts it, “Amidst the rest of the noise, lespecial is the squeaky wheel that demands attention.”

Mark Starr (Dirtybird Records)

:::Genre: Tech House, Dirtybird Bass

As all good sound-selectors should, Mark Starr has been honing his craft and developing his sound for almost a decade now. His production career, however, was recently been shoved into the fast lane ever since European booty connoisseurs Kill Frenzy and Sascha Robotti began playing his tracks in their sets. That early dirtybird connection came to full fruition once label-boss Claude VonStroke tweeted at the young producer, stating plainly: "send me something as good as your last remix (of Wet::Sex's "Spaceships") and it's signed on the spot!" A fortuitous moment in Mark's career, which has been on a steady upward ascent ever since; in the past year, he's released music on Skrillex's label OWSLA as well as on San Francisco's dirtybird (his track "Rood Boy," featured on the 2013 dirtybird players compilation, has been rinsed around the world by artists such as Justin Martin, Skream & Benga, Stanton Warriors, Riva Starr, Shadow Child and more).

This upcoming year, Mark shows no signs of stopping: already in the pipeline is a three-track EP for UK Bass label Sounds of Sumo, a remix for Kill Frenzy's upcoming "Booty Clap" single, as well as a cache of "still secret" collabs and projects in the works. These days, Mark splits his time touring and working on music in his home state of Florida.

Moe Pope & Drunken Doja Monkey

::::::Genre: Live Electronic Hip Hop

Moe Pope, originally from Boston, MA, is an indie hip-hop artist, songwriter and contemporary painter. As a lyricist, Pope chronicles the stories of his life and his community by touching upon subjects like fatherhood, relationships, and the human condition.

Pope released his first record One in 2001 as a member of San Francisco Bay-area group Mission (now Crown City Rockers), featuring Raashan Ahmad. After spending years with the band writing and touring, he returned to Boston to be with his daughter and continue the path of performance and art.

Upon his return to Boston, he connected with rapper/producer Insight and his five-man outfit, Electric (a.k.a Electric Company) and released Life's A Struggle (2004). Along with Electric members Anonymous and Raheem Jamal, Pope then went on to form a music collective called Project Move, and released their debut album Love Gone Wrong/Butterfly Theory (2006). Parting ways with Project Move in 2007, Pope reunited with former Crown City cohort Headnodic to release their highly lauded collaborative album Megaphone (2008), featuring appearances from Gift of Gab, Oh No, and Zion I among others.

In 2010, Pope hooked up with Boston producer Rain and released the critically acclaimed Life After God, an album that would change his career forever. The record earned a spot on iTunes Rewinds "Top 10 Albums of 2010", Boston Herald's "Top Local Hip Hop Album of 2010" and The Boston Phoenix "2011 Boston's Best". In addition, Pope was honored in The Improper Bostonian Music Issue as the "New Up and Comer" and he landed a cover and feature story in Stuff Magazine.

Drawing inspiration from a diverse background of influences, Pope has spent the last few years reinventing his craft and forming alliances to inspire his work. Now at the peak of his career, he announces his latest collaboration as Moe Pope & Rain for the release of the long awaited full-length album Let the Right Ones In, scheduled to drop January 22, 2013, on Brick Records.

Let The Right Ones In explores new sonic territory as Pope and Rain channel their diverse musical backgrounds to create a work that blurs the lines between hip-hop, indie-rock and electronic music. The album ranges from hip-hop tradition like A Tribe Called Quest, to the abstract prose of Bob Dylan, the pure adrenalin angst of Bad Brains, to Radiohead's relentless eccentricity. Pope's newest release promises to be a truly original culmination of a lifetime's experience and influences.

In the live performance setting Moe Pope performs under the moniker Moe Pope & Quills, with regular members Rain, Christopher Talkin and Michael McCarthy (Wobblesauce).

Let The Right Ones In will be available January 22, 2013 (Brick Records) throughout the United States in select retail outlets and digitally worldwide through iTunes and Amazon.

Moxa

::::::Genre: multi-genre jam band

MOXA is a multi-genre jam band from Boston, MA. It’s a capricious mix of sounds, crossing several genre lines such as funk, jazz, rock, and neo-soul. Vocals, bass, keys, drums and percussion compose the sound that is MOXA. In 2012, MOXA released their debut album, Those Who Seek Shall Find, and toured the east coast on The Atlantic Top-Down Tour, which had dates ranging from Vermont to Florida. At the moment, MOXA is working on releasing a second album, a live album from the tour, playing venues across New England, and gearing up for the 2013 summer festival season.

In June 2011, MOXA was first created as a 3-piece, starting with Nick Malkasian (Bass), Mark Goveia (Drums), and Jessi Milch (Vocals). This worked for a few months, but something was missing... Searching high and low for a pianist, leads fell through, but they didn’t have to look far as it dawned on them to include their friends, Tyler Adams (keyboards) and Max Weinstein (percussion), members of The Soul Panacea. In March 2012, the chapter of MOXA had begun as a unit of 5.

With heavy support throughout the summer from the likes of Seth Troxler, Noir, Clive Henry, Andrew Grant, Droog and many more.

Kicking off the New Year by playing the opening of BPM Festival in Mexico, 2013 will see Silky launch his new record label ‘Faceless Music’ alongside good friends Climbers and Barber, and will see him release a number of very exciting solo singles and collaborations with some of the industry’s most revered artists.

Worthy (Dirtybird Records)

:::Genre: Tech House, Dirtybird Bass

Worthy grew up around Washington DC in the early days of Deep Dish, Scott Henry and the early American rave scene. In the late 90’s after moving to New York City, he met good friend Justin Martin and was exposed to the sounds of people like LTJ Bukem, Stacey Pullen and Sasha. These artists greatly influenced his early ear while the expanding dance music scene encouraged him to play records of all genres; from hip hop to breaks to techno and drum ‘n’ bass.

In 2001 Worthy moved to San Francisco. He set up his studio and began producing house and techno music and DJing around the city. He later conspired with Christian Martin, Justin Martin and Claude VonStroke to co-create a fresh take on outdoor parties, rightly named Dirtybird. The Dirtybird parties have quickly become an institution for San Francisco die-hards and a destination for international travelers.

2006 brought the launch of Worthy’s label, Anabatic Records. Originally intended as an outlet for the release of his own music, Anabatic quickly branched out to take on new artists. Anabatic has been providing a steady stream of high quality tech house and has been gaining the praises of top DJs and Producers around the globe for its edgy new sound.

In 2007 Worthy broke out as a producer with his release of Irst_Te? on Dirtybird, Crack EL EP on Leftroom, and Bass Quake and Mummer EP on Anabatic. As well as doing remixes for Curfew, OM, Utensil, and Tentigo records, Worthys music production has been showing up on DJ charts across the world and has been played by everyone from Carl Cox to Sven Vath to Ben Watt.

With no signs of slowing down in 2008, Worthy has already released the underground hit Work The Walls on his label and its accompanying music video has given fans a glimpse into the la la land of his mind. With plenty more remixes and originals on their way and the continued growth of Anabatic Records, Worthy is set to continue getting everyone working the walls around the world.
