Welcome to C&B Volunteer Fire Department, located in northern Charleston and southern
Berkeley Counties, between the Town of Summerville and the community of Ladson, S.C.
The privilege of wearing the uniform of the C&B Fire Department is an honor and requires
certain obligations of you. In any team environment, someone calls the signals, someone carries
the ball, and others provide the protection. If each assignment is carried out, the team reaches
its objective. The same is true in the fire department; for only by working as a team do we gain
our objective. By contrast, failure to do so may have serious results. Injury, loss of life, and
property damage can be the products of improperly coordinated action.
As a new member you may feel lost, wondering whether your actions are right or wrong. This is
normal since experience will provide the basis for future development. More experienced
members will serve as a guide in unfamiliar situations. Accept this help in the spirit in which it
is given and it will benefit all concerned.
One of the first things to learn is the ability to recognize and occupy your position in the
organization, and to conduct yourself in such a manner as to bring credit and honor to the
Department. The public has the right to expect expert service from their department when
individual lives or the safety of their property is at stake.
Remember, the way you talk, the way you dress, and the way you act (especially in an
emergency) are reflections of the Department. You must be willing to accept this responsibility.
This Personnel Guide is designed as a source of information. It is not expected to, nor can it,
provide for every question and problem that may arise in a department for emergency service.
Read it well, refer to it often, and above all, be guided by it.
