Carolina Mariculture Co. is a small, family owned, oyster farm located on Cedar Island, NC (about 30 miles NE of Beaufort). We raise oysters using mariculture practices: we buy our seed from a hatchery and raise them to market size in floating cages on our lease. Due to this we have control of our product from start to finish. Our oysters are never on the bottom and as such aren’t muddy or overgrown. We specialize in growing single oysters as opposed to clusters or doubles. These oysters are uniform in size and shape with a deep cup, perfect for serving on the half shell. Due to our farming practices, our oysters can be enjoyed year round, not just in months with an “R”.
Oyster farming is also beneficial to wild oysters. . Carolina Mariculture Co. purchases “spat” (baby oysters) from a hatchery, so we aren’t relying on wild oysters to provide us with seed stock. Therefore, we provide you with a high quality oyster without having to take any from the wild population, which is at 1%-2% of the 1900 population . Additionally, our floating cages form artificial reefs which provide a home to many ecologically and commercially valuable species in their juvenile phases. With about 75% of the oysters consumed in NC being imported we hope that you will “buy local” and support the retailers that provide you with local products. Thank you for purchasing our product.
