More about Cascade Village Karate

As an instructor of Matsumura Seito Shorin Ryu Karate, my philosophy tends to be what we consider classical in the sense that it must work as a method of self-defense for the individual. We all have strengths and weaknesses. As we age our physical abilities diminish. At any age, injuries occur and other forms of disabilities challenge us to compensate and adapt. Although I am teaching the standards of Matsumura Seito Shorin Ryu, in the end it must have a practical benefit to the individual in the way of self-defense and health.

As our body learns a new activity such as karate, movements tend to feel awkward and clumsy. Development of proper technique occurs at the individual's pace. New students will be taught and challenged to develop classical Okinawan karate technique. If after attempts to learn classical movements a personal limitation is discovered, we will find a way to work around it. Even though beginners are learning new movements, Matsumura Seito Shorin Ryu teaches natural body mechanics to apply all of its techniques.

Point tournament sparring is not something I'm interested in teaching. Although some good things can be learned this type of sparring, I have seen more bad habits than good. Besides it's not how the tempo of a real fight would be.

All students will learn traditional Okinawan katas. Katas are a set of movements arranged in a specific sequence to teach a karate application and how to move in combat. The development of a kata begins with the mental process of memorizing the movements. Eventually with enough repetition and instruction muscle memory takes over and the body knows the movements. Once the body works all of the movements of a kata, the kata begins to teach the individual. Progressing to this point of kata development is the hope I have for my students.
