Centro Cívico Mexicano

CCM is the oldest nonprofit Hispanic organization in Utah. It is an organization that serves the Hispanic community in the Salt Lake Valley by providing educational, cultural, social and athletic activities.Centro Cívico Mexicano (CCM) es más que un edificio. Es un símbolo que represente el espíritu de mexicanos quien vino con orgullo de ser Mexicano, pero todavía preparados para defender y contribuir a su tierra adoptado. CCM fue formado en los 1930 por inmigrantes de México quien migró al área de Salt Lake para trabajo y crecer a sus familias. Querían un lugar donde podían reunirse para bailar, divertirse, y tener celebraciones. Durante esta época ante cívico se enfrentaron a la discriminación esta época pre-civil se enfrentaron a la discriminación practicada por los propietarios de edificios locales que se negó al alquiler a los Mexicanos que buscaban un lugar para celebrar sus tradiciones anuales y festividades culturales. El centro fue fundado por su compromiso para perpetuar su cultura y para mejorar las vidas de los mexicanos.

Tanto los hombres como las mujeres proporcionaron liderazgo y comenzaron a recaudar dinero por llamar a las puertas, sobre todo de mexicanos que vivían a rededor a la Misión de Guadalupe ubicado cerca del Depósito de Rio Grande. Conjunto de recursos, en conjunto adquirieron la propiedad inicial en Centro Cívico Mexicano existe hoy en día. Centro Cívico Mexicano fue adoptado como el nombre oficial de esta organización. Al principio, una pequeña construcción fue construida, para ser reemplazado más tarde por una mayor instalación más permanente. Aquí se podría celebrar fiestas como Cinco de Mayo y también la Independencia de México el 16 de septiembre. Se celebraron debates sobre los retos muchos estaban teniendo con el idioma Inglés, la búsqueda de empleo, y la adopción a la cultura anglosajona. Las actividades educativas se llevaron a cabo para niños y adultos.

Centro Civico Mexicano (CCM) is more than a building. It is a symbol representing the spirit of Mexicans who came to America with “orgullo”, proud to be Mexican, yet prepared to defend and contribute to their adopted homeland. CCM was formed in the 1930’s by proud immigrants from Mexico who migrated to the Salt Lake City area to work and raise their families. They wanted a place where they could meet together to dance, have fun, and hold celebrations. During this pre-civil rights era they faced discrimination practiced by local building owners who refused renting to Mexicans who sought a place to celebrate their annual traditions and cultural festivities. Centro was founded because of their commitment to perpetuate their culture and to help improve the lives of Mexicans.

Both men and women provided leadership and started raising money by knocking on doors, primarily of Mexicans living around the Guadalupe Mission located near the Rio Grande Depot. Pooling their resources together they purchased the initial property where Centro Civico Mexicano exists today. Adjoining property was obtained later. In 1939, with the purchase of the land, Centro Civico Mexicano was adopted as the official name for this organization. At first a small adobe building was constructed, to be replaced later by a larger, more permanent facility. Here they could celebrate celebrations such as Cinco de Mayo and the Independence of Mexico on September 16. Discussions were held concerning challenges many were having with the English language, finding employment, and adapting to the Anglo culture. Educational activities were held for children and adults.
