Our name reflects the story of Evaristo, a young man from Tanzania who was sponsored by a family in the U.S. to attend college in Iowa. He wanted to thank the people who sponsored him, and felt that the best way to do this would be to make this opportunity possible for more people like himself.
This translated into the Magulilwa Area Secondary School project, which started with a small group of people in the U.S., partnering with the Magulilwa community in Tanzania. They started a school in a place that used to be abandoned buildings. Many families saw secondary education as an unreachable goal, now education permeates the community and brings hope for a better future. Since opening its doors in 2007, the school has added a new class of 75 students each year, along with new building accommodations for classrooms, dormitories, library, science hall, and staff facilities. Hundreds of individuals have made generous contributions in order to make this project possible. Magulilwa families worked to make bricks from the red earth. Teachers were recruited from around the country. Magulilwa Secondary has earned an excellent reputation in the region. We are extremely proud of these accomplishments, but still have much more to do.
We remain committed to fulfilling our promise to the people of Magulilwa to complete the construction of the school, and to continue to provide a high quality education to its students.
