Civil Air Patrol was founded on December 1st, 1941, one week before the attack on Pearl Harbor. During World War Two, its members used their own aircraft to provide search and rescue, training, courier, cargo, and even submarine patrol missions. During the war, over 500,000 flight hours were logged and two German U-boats were confirmed sunk. When the United States Air Force was founded in 1947, Civil Air Patrol became its official auxiliary.
