Timothy Cheney, farmer, miller and one of America's famous early clock makers, built the Cheney Homestead about 1785. A brook to the south of the home afforded water for the grist mill which he operated with his son George. Upon his death in 1795, Timothy left the house to George who, along with his wife Electa, raised their nine children in the house that would later be called "The Homestead" by generations of Cheneys. Two of George and Electa's children, John and Seth became prominent, wealthy artists who funded brothers Charles, Ward, Rush and Frank in the creation of the Cheney Silk Mills.
