CSU, Chico runs a bio-secure hog facility that features purebred Yorkshires and crossbred sows to produce barrows and gilts for 4H and FFA members to take to their county fairs or to purchase as breeding replacements. The hogs are sired by outstanding A.I. sires from all over the U.S.
Annually the CSUC Swine Unit emphasizes in improving competitive show hogs and hosts an annual Swine Day for the purpose of educating young upcoming hog showmen on selection, carcass fabrication, nutrition, showmanship and more.
At the swine unit students are involved in all aspects of the production and management of the hogs beginning with the planning of the A.I., breeding, farrowing, weaning, feeding and keeping track of performance records. Students are at the center of this educational experience.
