More about Cincinnati Therapeutic Riding and Horsemanship

The mission of Cincinnati Therapeutic Riding and Horsemanship (CTRH) is to provide a comprehensive recreational and therapeutic horseback riding program for children and adults with disabilities from the Greater Cincinnati area.

Cincinnati Therapeutic Riding and Horsemanship (CTRH) is a 501(c)3 non-profit. We are committed to the principle that people with disabilities are entitled to the same opportunities and rights as their non-disabled peers. We provide a comprehensive recreational and therapeutic horseback riding program for children and adults with disabilities in the greater Cincinnati area.

The dream of starting CTRH began with the positive response of campers with disabilities when stable owner Childress (Chile) Rodgers brought ponies to Day Camp Stepping Stone. Campers were encouraged to touch, groom and get on the backs of the ponies. It was nothing short of a miracle to see children who were unable to speak squeal with joy when they saw and touched a pony. Even children in wheelchairs delighted in reaching up to hug a pony. Day Camp Stepping Stone Director Sue Radabaugh, Teacher/Horsewoman Bobbi Thies, and Chile Rodgers were intrigued, and, in 1985, founded our program, then called Cincinnati Riding for the Handicapped. In the first year of operation 5 riders participated. This year, we anticipate that 125 riders will participate in over 1700 hours of service.

We are proud to own our own facility in Milford, Ohio. Formerly the Red Fox Stable, our 19-acre property has been significantly improved since we acquired it in 2002. All buildings are now handicap-accessible. Our state-of-the-art indoor riding ring, the Hatton Riding Center, was completed in 2009, allowing us to offer our classes all year long. We have added a lovely outdoor pavilion, the Jane Thomas Pavilion and an indoor viewing area for parents, the Thomas Family Viewing Room. We now call our building The Big Red Barn.
