City of El Segundo Richmond Street Improvement Project

In the spring, 2016, the City’s Public Works Department began construction on the
Richmond St. Street Improvement Project, which will span the 100, 200 and 300
blocks of Richmond St. This project will achieve several City goals, including
eliminating the tripping hazards caused by the Ficus tree roots, restoring the sidewalk, curbs
and gutters, providing additional parking throughout the commercial area, and improving
pedestrian lighting. The approved designs represent the culmination of planning and
stakeholder involvement, which occurred throughout most of 2015.

Project design elements include:
Removal of all remaining Ficus trees, which will be replaced with alternating strawberry trees and King Palm trees throughout all three blocks;
Widening the street from 40’ to 46’ and narrowing the sidewalks from 10’ to 7’;
Installing angled parking on the west side of the street and parallel parking on the east side of the street;
Improving handicapped parking and access; and Providing new solar pedestrian lightting.

Construction is anticipated to start at the beginning of April, 2016 and last approximately
three months (one month per block, weather dependent). While each block is under
construction, pedestrian access to businesses and one lane for thru traffic will be maintained.
