More about City of Fortuna

Located on the northeast bank of the Eel River seven miles from the rugged Pacific coastline of northern California, the City of Fortuna is home to approximately 12,000 residents and covers and area of 4.8 square miles. Fortuna, originally known as “Slide,” was incorporated in 1906 and was named for the fortune of its residents in finding such excellent quality of life.
Fortuna is surrounded by large, rural ranches that graze cattle and horses, as well as a number of National, State, and Country Redwood parks; it is the gateway to the Sequoia Giant Redwood forests of northern California. Although the City of Fortuna is affected by coastal weather patterns, its nickname of “Sunny Fortuna” is indicative of the climate enjoyed by its residents and visitors. Since it’s founding in the 1800’s, Fortuna has been known as “The Friendly City” and was chosen by the original settlers for its ideal location and economic prosperity. Today, the City is also well known for its events and festivals including the AutoXPo, Ar & Wine in the Park, the Fortuna Fireworks Festival, the Fortuna Rodeo, the Daffodil Festival, and Hops in Humboldt. The Depot Museum in Rohner Park and the City’s Redwood Forest attract many visitors year-round.
Opportunities for shopping, dining, and recreation abound in the nearby Cities of Ferndale, Eureka, Arcata, and seaside Trinidad. Cultural opportunities abound at nearby Humboldt State University, and the surrounding areas are home to many thriving artists. Within a short drive from Fortuna are the attractions and recreation opportunities afforded by Fern Canyon and the Six Rivers National Forest. Fortuna is also the starting point for the Lost Coast Drive, a 100 mile loop that offers some of the grandest vistas, the most remote beaches, and the tallest trees in California. Fortuna has a reputation as a forward-thinking, business-friendly community. It is home to the River Lodge, a popular conference facility, and the entrepreneurial spirit thrives in Fortuna – a result of the City’s combination of a culture that values hard work and a team of organizations constantly working to improve the business Climate. The City of Fortuna’s residents and visitors alike enjoy a beautiful location, a pleasant climate, and the friendliness of a small community.
The City of Fortuna is governed by a Council/Manager form of government. The City Council consists of five members, elected from the City at large, who serve four-year terms. The Mayor and the Mayor Pro Tem are elected by-annually by the City Council form among its members. The City Manager works under the direction of the City Council and is responsible supporting the policies enacted by the City Council, as well as managing the day-to-day operations of the City.
