City of Huntsville, TX - Main Street

Main Street is a downtown redevelopment program at work in over 40 states and over a thousand cities nationwide. The program uses a combination of economic development, infrastructure improvements, promotions and cooperative efforts that seek to revitalize downtown areas. The Texas Historical Commission administers the Texas Main Street Program and designated Huntsville as a Main Street City in 2001.

The Main Street Program facilitates the creation of an inviting and historic downtown area and other noteworthy places that serve as the center of economic, cultural and social activity for the City of Huntsville’s residents and visitors.

The Main Street Program coordinates community programming and supports the collaboration of joint events with such entities as downtown merchants, the Chamber of Commerce, local service clubs, and other organizations to foster community, celebrate the City’s historic resources and attract visitors to downtown.

The Main Street Program is also responsible for implementation of Huntsville’s new Preservation Ordinance and for coordinating the City’s preservation activities with those of state and federal agencies and with local, state, and national nonprofit preservation organizations.
