The Clanton Police Department is a professional 21st Century law enforcement agency located in the heart of Chilton County that is preparing to grow with the community.

The Clanton Police Department is authorized 30 sworn law enforcement personnel. Every member of the Clanton Police Department is outfitted from head to toe with the most modern law enforcement technology. The police department issues the Glock 22 and Sig Sauer P226 .40 caliber handgun as the primary service weapon and Glock 27 as the backup service weapon.

Each officer is issued a Colt or Rock River AR-15 and a Mossberg 12 Gauge shotgun. The City of Clanton provides officers with the newest PT Armor body armor every 5 years. The department provides each officer with all of his/her uniforms and duty gear. In addition, the City of Clanton provides a monthly clothing allowance to officers to maintain or replace old or outdated equipment.

Clanton Police Department officers are required to be APOSTC certified and maintain their certification by attending at least 12 CEU hours per year. At the present time the department is divided into three divisions: Patrol Division, Detectives Division, and the Probation Division.

Patrol Division:
Captain Freeman Ellison supervises the Patrol Division. The 16 employee division is primary responsibility of patrolling the neighborhoods and business districts in the city and answering calls for service 24 hours each day. The Patrol Division works 12 hour shifts that rotate which allow the officers more time with their families throughout the year. Within the Patrol Division we have several specialized units that provide service to the City of Clanton. We have Commercial Motor Vehicle Officers, K-9 Officers, Traffic Homicide Officers, and an Animal Control Officer. The Patrol Division maintains a roster of 10 part-time officers that are utilized for a variety of details throughout the city.

Detectives Division:
Captain David Clackley supervises the Detectives Division which has the primary responsibility of investigating felony crimes in the corporate limits of the municipality.

Within the Detectives Division, we have several specialized units that provide service to the City of Clanton. We have General Crime Detectives who handle all felony crimes against persons and/or property, Narcotics Detectives who handle crimes involving the sale, use, trafficking, and distribution of controlled substance crimes, and the Clanton Neighborhood Improvement Team that is responsible for targeted enforcement in various areas of the City of Clanton. The Detectives Division also maintains a roster of 10 non-sworn reserve officers that provide service to the community.

Probation Division:
Captain Neil Fetner supervises the Probation Division which is responsible for the supervision of municipal probationers, sex offenders, court security, community service, and other diversion programs.

Community Involvement

The Clanton Police Department participates in numerous events throughout each year such as the Peach Jam, Peach Festival, Peach Parade, The Chilton County Fair, and National Night Out to name a few. The Police Department is committed to providing the community with information and Chief Stilwell has addressed numerous community groups in order to help accomplish this task.
