Clegg's Nursery

Clegg's Nursery is a locally owned garden center that has been flourishing in Baton Rouge, Louisiana since its initial start by Mr. Sam Clegg in 1955. Mr. Sam and his wife Effie, who together shared a strong passion for gardening and a will to succeed, began their humble business by selling a few plants on an empty lot on Florida Boulevard. In 1968, they set root at 274 North Donmoor with their first official garden center and continued to thrive.

In 1981, Mr. Sam and Mrs. Effie sold the business to their son Marshall, who dug even deeper into the nursery industry. By 1982, Marshall opened the second Clegg’s store on Siegen Lane, a year later he spread his roots further when he opened the third nursery on Greenwell Springs Road.

In 1999, Marshall sold the business to Scott Ricca of Baton Rouge and Tom Fennell of Watson, two Clegg’s managers who had worked with Marshall since 1983. Both Scott and Tom have succeeded in keeping Clegg’s Nursery growing—they opened a fourth location in November, 2000, on Highway 16 North, between Denham Springs and Watson.

The two owners branched beyond retail business in 2003 when they opened a wholesale growing operation. Clegg’s Color Division, the most recent addition to the nursery, hosts over 40,000 square feet of commercial greenhouses and an experienced growing staff who enables the retail stores to provide customers with some of the best locally grown bedding plants in Baton Rouge.
