More about Colonial Country Club

The original farmhouse, turned clubhouse, was built in 1902 for Brantley and Louisa Lambeth who operated a 250-acre dairy farm on the property. They moved there from a log cabin, where nine of the eleven Lambeth children were born. one of the daughters, Ethel, was married to Arch Everhart in a garden ceremony under a grove of trees near the current 18th green.

In the mid-1930's, Doak Finch acquired the property. he rented to Allen and Gladys Frazier, who farmed tobacco for 12 years on 7 acres of the bottom land that is now the back nine holes of the golf course. They worked the land with a team of mules and always had a watermelon patch for the workers to enjoy. During the Frazies' tenure, E. Fremont and Vivian Mendenhall purchased the land and the Mendenhalls built their home on part of the property across the lake from the 16th tee. Another family lived in the house while Mendenhall pulled together plans to develop the land as a private country club.

In 1958, Mendenhall leased 238 acres of the property to the original 92 residents of High Point and Thomasville who donated $100 each to expand the country club development. The lease was for five years with an option to buy. In 1962, Hi Tom Realty Company was formed to purchase the property.

Members were assigned one hole of the original nine to clear of the rocks and debris, Betsy Upton recalled. Prizes were awarded for the most improved fairways. Serving as the first president during the formative years was Joe Jarrell. The back nine holes were completed in the early 1960s.

In 1973,Colonial Country Club, Inc. became independent of Hi Tom Realty Company. The total 18-hole course was redesigned by Golf Course Architict, Gene Hamm in 1974. The original clubhouse was demolished in June 1989 to allow construction of the present clubhouse, which was completed in July 1990.
