STATION 21

Station 21 is located at East Main Street and Hampton Road on the east side of Columbus. It was opened on May 5, 1951 and cost $125,360. Stations 20 and 21 were the first one-floor engine houses built in Columbus. They cost more to build than two-story stations but their design reflected 20th Century architecture and was designed to blend in with the neighborhood.

They incorporated several modern improvements like rear apparatus doors to eliminate backing into the station and heated bay floors. The one-floor plan also eliminated poles that caused numerous injuries and some early retirements because of permanent disabilities.

The station opened with the first two prototype Seagrave 70th Anniversary Edition fire trucks. Engine 21 and Ladder 21, a 65’ aerial ladder, were the first engine and ladder of this new model built at the Columbus Seagrave plant in 1951. The ladder was moved to Station 23 in 1970 to give better coverage to the east side and Eastland Shopping Center.

Station 21 responds to residential areas, Port Columbus Airport, manufacturing and commercial complexes. It also responds by contract into the City of Bexley and has mutual aid with the City of Whitehall and the Defense Supply Construction Center.
