More about Columbus Speech & Hearing Center

Imagine dinner without conversation. Imagine your child never hearing: I love you. From anyone. Ever. Imagine not being able to talk with a friend, sing along to the radio or hear the telephone ring. What if time after time you were passed over for a job because you were perceived as being unqualified, a safety risk, or simply unable to do the job because of a disability? These are regular, everyday things in life that most of us take for granted.

For many of us, communication is anything but easy. Speech, language and hearing problems affect 1 of every 10 people. The impact is profound at any age. Communication skills are critical to a young child’s development. Without help, these children simply don’t develop the skills they need to learn, to grow, to become productive. Hearing loss is a major factor affecting the health, wellness and quality of life of adults, as well. There is a clear connection between untreated hearing loss and social problems, including feelings of depression, social isolation, low self-esteem and difficulty functioning.

People who are deaf, hard of hearing, deaf-blind, or have other disabilities have a more difficult time securing employment. Unemployment rates for people with disabilities are disproportionately high. We work to reduce barriers to employment and enhance job-competitiveness for job-ready individuals.

Columbus Speech & Hearing Center offers help – and hope. We believe that communication is what connects people to each other and to the world around them. We also believe that people with disabilities have the right to lead meaningful and independent lives. So when we help someone hear better or find a job or learn to express their thoughts and ideas through speech or sign language, we’ve made their world a better place. And ours, too.

Sincerely,
Dawn Gleason, Au.D.
