Amidst the complex web of crises facing this country, one thing remains clear: the power of the federal government is out of control. There is little chance those in Washington, D.C., will relinquish this power or halt the escalating growth of a centralized national government.

The federal budget represents the most glaring example of this excessive expansion. The $17 trillion national debt is staggering, but it only tells a part of the story. If we apply the normal rules of accounting, the federal government possesses a huge additional obligation to pay for vested Social Security benefits and other similar programs. This is why the government cannot tax its way out of debt. Even if they confiscated everything, it would not cover the debt.

Thomas Jefferson once said, “I…place economy among the first and most important of republican virtues, and public debt as the greatest of the dangers to be feared.” Congress has ignored these words. Instead, it has abused its power, using entitlement programs to gain votes and catapult the United States into massive debt.

This abuse of power—instigated by both Republicans and Democrats—goes far beyond mere irresponsibility. Economists believe that the burden of the national debt will shift forward to future generations: our children and grandchildren will pay for Washington’s spending spree. There will be taxes imposed for spending they never approved and from which they never directly benefited. The cry of that generation will echo that of the founding generation: “Taxation without representation!” Clearly, “irresponsible” is an understatement; “tyrannical” may be more appropriate.

The federal budget is only one manifestation of this tyranny—there are many more. Fortunately, the Founders gave us a tool to stop it.

The Solution

When the national government becomes drunk with abuses of power, the states were given the authority to reorganize the government in a manner that preserves the Republic and preserves liberty. Article V of the Constitution gives states the power to call a convention for the purpose of proposing amendments to the Constitution. Using an Article V convention, the states can stop the spending and debt spree, the power grabs of the federal courts, and the forfeiture of American sovereignty to the UN.

Our plan differs from other Article V convention proposals. Rather than calling a convention for a particular amendment, we want to call a convention for a particular issue—the runaway power of the federal government. This will ensure the convention is specific enough to be productive, but general enough to allow the delegates to hash out a large number of issues. No one has ever tried this, but it is the best strategy to hold a successful convention and preserve American liberty.

We are approaching a crossroads. One path leads to the escalating power of an irresponsible centralized government, ultimately resulting in the financial ruin of generations of Americans. The other path leads to freedom and the chance to once again be proud of these United States.

Which will we choose?

Liberty starts here.
