DR. NANCY VERA, CCAFT President
Nancy Vera received her Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Texas A & M University - Corpus Christi in May 2007. Her area of specialty is leadership development, community engagement, advocacy for the disenfranchised and marginalized, and working with highly at-risk students. Dr. Vera is also a graduate of Leadership Corpus Christi, Class 36. She is certified to be a principal.
Dr. Vera was born in Corpus Christi and has lived here most of her life. She graduated from Foy H. Moody High School and received her Bachelor's degree from Corpus Christi State University. She left Corpus Christi in 1991 to work as an educator representative in Dallas. She traveled extensively across the United States conducting presentations on cutting-edge educational initiatives for the Texas State Teachers Association and the National Education Association.
Upon returning to Corpus Christi in 2001, Dr. Vera concentrated her efforts on earning her doctorate degree and assisting non-profit organizations and serving on committees to enhance the quality of life for others in Corpus Christi. She is currently a member of several community organizations and is past president of the League of United Latin American Citizens, Council #4444, past president of the Texas A & M University - Corpus Christi National Alumni Foundation, vice president of the Corpus Christi American Federation of Teachers, and a board member of the Corpus Christi Police Department's Training Advisory Committee and the Corpus Christi Caller-Times Community Advisory Committee. She is serving as an appointee to Texas Representative Abel Herrero's 2013 Legislative Education Committee and Corpus Christi Mayor Nelda Martinez's Mayor's Advisory Committee. Dr. Vera has also participated on numerous cultural and educational panels.
Dr. Vera enjoys reading, working on multi-media projects, listening to music - especially classical music and traditional Mexican folk music (rancheras, boleros), collecting and watching Jack Benny comedy skits and shows, writing short stories and poems, public speaking, social networking, graphic designing, playing computer games, community involvement/organizing and spending quality time with her family and friends. Dr. Vera's dream is to establish a peace and social justice center in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Most recently, Dr. Vera was named the 2014 National, State and District LULAC Woman of the Year, inducted into the National LULAC Woman's Hall of Fame, awarded the League of United Latin American Citizens, Council #1, President's Medal and LULAC, Council #1, Community Advocacy Award. She has been awarded a 2013 National LULAC President's Gold Medal. She has also been recognized in 2014 by the Nueces County Commissioners Court and the Corpus Christi City Council as a role model citizen. She also received the 2014 Trailblazer Award from the Nueces County Democratic Party and another 2014 Trailblazer Award from the Hispanic Women's Network of Corpus Christi. Also, Dr. Vera was named as an Outstanding Islander by Texas A & M University - Corpus Christi.
