Carman Road Artist Quarters (CRAQ) is an intentional artist community in Mecklenburg NY. Remodeled and refurbished out of a collection of farming barns built by the Carman family in the early and mid 1900's. CRAQ is home to a number of studio and living spaces for artists and individuals of all types of creative talent. CRAQ was purchased by David Van Nostrand in 1992, and since 1995 he and a number of others have worked to rebuild the property to allow it to function as community artist complex. CRAQ has been home to well over 30 artists in the past 20 years, including but by no means limited to: blacksmiths, woodworkers, painters, photographers, leatherworkers, welders, chainsaw artists, carvers, movement artists, musicians, and jewelers. With it's easy accessibility to Ithaca, Trumansburg, and Hector (15 minutes from each), CRAQ creates space for artists to work in quiet, country solitude, with easy access to clients and gallery spaces in the local towns.
It's an ongoing and ever evolving vision, and has become a lifestyle and deeply loved place for many of us self-named CRAQheads. Hope to see you around some time.
