Addiction and drug use is a longstanding practice and problem. Since early times, as long as there were drugs, there were those who would abuse them and those who become full blown addicts. Opium dates back to circa 3400 B.C. when it was referred to as Hul Gil, the ´joy plant' by the Summerians.

Over the last 4 centuries, the treatment for addiction has evolved. Rehabilitation, interventions or groups to assist users is not a modern day concept. In the 1700's Native American tribes created sobriety circles and one of the first homes for the inebriate opened in Boston around the 1840´s which prompted the support for those with alcohol problems.

What has evolved is today we recognize that addiction is a treatable disease that does affect brain function. The treatment plan needs to be fluid and assessed continually, modified as needed in order to be part of the long term recovery. Over 70 diseases are related to addiction. Substance abuse disorder can create numerous medical complications therefore medical assessment and medication management is one arm of treatment.
