More about Cubahatchie Baptist Church

On July 14, 1838 Cubahatchie Baptist Church was organized with twelve members. These twelve people adopted a constitution to be governed by. The constitution stated the church would be known by the name of "The Baptist Church of Christ at Cubahatchie". In 1841, Mr. Daniel McGill donated the land where the church is today. One of the early members, Richard Stratford, was a contractor and agreed to build the church for $475.00. Mr. Stratford also agreed to build a pulpit, table and to put in windows, in place of shutters, for an additional $40.

Many early church members were people from South Carolina and Georgia on their journey west. The church was a vital part of the community. Its members were actively involved in missionary work, serving as missionaries to the area's Creek Indians.

The church was dissolved in July 1850 and reorganized that same year. The present church building was erected in 1852. At that time, there were 28 members.

Through the years, the church continued to grow and work in the community. In 1976, attendance had increased to the extent that more space was needed. Therefore, an educational building was completed which added four Sunday school rooms, a kitchen, and a fellowship hall. The baptistery was added to the sanctuary in the 1980's and most recently more Sunday school rooms and bathrooms were added to the original building.

Cubahatchie Baptist Church, under the leadership of 28 pastors, has been a vital part of the Shorter community for 170 years. God has used its members to help meet the spiritual, physical, and financial needs of individuals and families in the area.

With the recent revitalization of the church's early missionary vision and the addition of the Men and Women Ministries, the members of Cubahatchie Baptist Church believe we should carry out the Great Commission, because Jesus is Lord!
