The Daughters of Penelope is an international philanthropic women's organization. It is non-partisan and non-denominational. Today, the Daughters of Penelope is a leader in philanthropic, educational and cultural activities and supports a variety of educational, charitable, and social projects. The organization has an active scholarship program. While it cultivates the ideals and traditions of Hellenism, the Daughters of Penelope encourages and promotes loyalty to the country in which our members live.
Story of Penelope. When her husband Ulysses failed to return from the Trojan War, Penelope waited faithfully for him while putting off numerous suitors. She insisted she could not remarry until she had finished weaving a shroud for her father-in-law Laertes. This was never finished, for she unraveled by night what she wove by day.
