Discovery Hall Programs (DHP), named for the early research vessel, "Discovery", began in 1975, opening the field of marine science to Alabama secondary school students through hands-on field and laboratory experiences. Since its initiation, DHP has expanded its marine education program to include K-12 students, teacher training / enhancement programs, and Elderhostel seminars. Easy access to beaches, coastal wetlands, Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico provides the Program with an ideal location for marine learning experiences. All Discovery Hall Programs are intended to increase understanding and appreciation for science and the marine environment by directly involving participants in that environment with dynamic, hands-on activities. Today, over 15,000 students a year participate in Discovery Hall Programs
