More about Deborah Govenor Piano Studio

The piano is the ideal instrument for beginning musical training because it incorporates the melodic, rhythmic and harmonic elements of music and helps to develop self-motivation and self-discipline.

Is your child ready for lessons?
Does s/he have an attention span of reasonable length for lessons and practice? Does s/he have sufficient small muscle control and eye-hand coordination? (Piano lessons will greatly improve this!) Does s/he go to the piano and pick out “tunes” rather than “banging” on the keys? Most importantly, does s/he have the interest in piano lessons? Are you as a parent willing to spend the time necessary for lessons and practice time? Do you have an adequate instrument for her/him to practice on?

I recommend starting a child on the piano no earlier than age 6. The early elementary grades seem to be the ideal time for lessons.
Lessons are normally one half-hour weekly in my home studio. I use method books based on a multi-key approach, with supplementary material in a wide range of styles. Students will learn music theory, technique, musicianship, listening and ear training, ensemble playing, memorization, composition, improvisation, harmonization, transposition and sight reading.

Parents and the teacher are partners in the music education process. Parents are always welcome at lessons and are strongly encouraged to attend lessons for the first few months of the child’s training.

My goal is for the student to have fun and to develop a love for music while learning the fundamentals of piano, using a variety of music and techniques.

What about practicing?
Parental involvement is the key! Plan to sit with your child during the practice sessions for the first few months, then be available to answer questions and encourage your child. Parental music experience is not necessary – you will learn along with your child!

What do lessons cost?
My fees are currently $20.00 per half-hour lesson. Payment may be made by the month or by the week.
I will purchase the music and other material. Method books must be purchased; supplementary materials may be purchased or borrowed.

A word about myself:

I am an Ohio native and a graduate of The Ohio State University, where I received a Bachelor of Music Education degree as a piano major, and Trinity Lutheran Seminary, where I received a Master of Theological Studies degree. I have served as organist in various Columbus, Ohio Lutheran churches, as well as directing adult, junior, high school and bell choirs, in addition to teaching piano for many years. I am also a composer with over 60 published choral compositions. I have been employed by Beckenhorst Press, Inc., a sacred music publishing company in Columbus, Ohio for 23 years and am currently employed as the Organ Editor. I am currently serving as the organist/ choir director at St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Ellsworth, Maine.

I hope that you will consider a musical education for your child. If you have any questions at any time, please call or e-mail me for more information. Thank you for your interest!
