Deer Lake is an unorganized territory in Itasca County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 3,495 at the 2010 census. It is the setting for novels by author Tami Hoag.GeographyAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the unorganized territory has a total area of 216.0 square miles (559.4 km²), of which 182.7 square miles (473.2 km²) is land and 33.3 square miles (86.2 km²), or 15.41%, is water.DemographicsAs of the census of 2000, there were 3,286 people, 1,304 households, and 993 families residing in the unorganized territory. The population density was 18.0 people per square mile (6.9/km²). There were 2,154 housing units at an average density of 11.8/sq mi (4.6/km²). The racial makeup of the unorganized territory was 98.05% White, 0.91% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.49% of the population.There were 1,304 households out of which 28.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.2% were married couples living together, 3.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.8% were non-families. 20.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.87.
