More about Delaware Shorebird Project

The Delaware Shorebird Project is a Project within the Delaware Division of Fish and Wildlife’s Species Conservation and Research Program. Staff and a team of dedicated and highly-skilled volunteers conduct research and monitoring on the health and status of migratory shorebird populations including Red Knot, Ruddy Turnstone, Sanderling, Dunlin and Semipalmated Sandpiper. The Project uses this scientific data to understand the resource needs of shorebirds including high quality feeding and roosting sites. In addition, the Project is also involved in monitoring and protecting nesting shorebirds such as the American Oystercatcher.

Data collected is used to identify feeding, roosting, and nesting habitat required by shorebirds and develops conservation actions that will protect or enhance those habitats. The goal is to ensure migratory shorebirds have the resources they need to successfully migrate to their Arctic nesting grounds. It is also to ensure that there is adequate nesting habitat available for nesting shorebirds.
