More about Delichina

Flushing, Queens is becoming one of the fastest growing Asian communities in New York. Right at the heart of Flushing in the business district is a new restaurant called Delichina. Delichina or delicious China is a new establishment devoted to bringing the spirit of traditional and genuine Chinese food to America. What’s special about this restaurant is the specificity of their cultural and culinary specialties. Of the 34 provinces and 56 ethnic groups in China, Delichina mainly concentrates on cuisine from the Chinese province of Guizhou and the Miao Society. Owner Daisy Deng who is Miao has a great pride for her culture and wanted to share that with the world.
She talked about the importance of the taste of sour too her people. To the Miao, the taste of sour is considered exciting, moving, rejuvenating and healthy. There’s even a Miao saying that says if you haven’t tasted sour for a few days you feel ill. A major dish for the Miao is sour fish soup. The process of making this dish takes time and a lot of effort. It is not only delicious but medicinal too.
Deng pays so much respect for the dish that she hired a professional calligrapher from China to paint each of the 102 different characters for the individual words. Each province has a way of representing each word and there are three words all together. The walls of Delichina were decorated with traditional calligraphy of koi fish, mountains, forests and the 102 characters for sour fish soup.
To bring out the full spirit of her cooking, Deng hired Yang Hu who is a famous chef in China to cook for her restaurant. In May 2010 Mr. Hu won second place on China’s top chef and won first place in the 2011 China Central Television Best Sour Fish soup competition. The décor of the restaurant had eastern and western influences. From jade sculptures, colorful vegetation, exotic fish, traditional Miao paintings and cushy furniture, Delichina pulled all the stops to impress you the moment you walk in. The restaurant is open from 11am to 11pm while the bar opens from 11pm to 5am. Delichina is becoming the bridge between America and Guizhou.
