Department of History, The Citadel

The History Major at The Citadel is designed to produce college graduates who are well-educated, well-rounded, and therefore, well-qualified to exercise leadership in all walks of life. Our curriculum offers a large number of courses in U.S., European, Latin American, Non-Western, Military and Diplomatic History. It also includes many general electives which students may use either to specialize in one of these areas of history or to develop a concentration of courses that better prepared them for a particular career.
Currently, over 130 students major in History with every student in the program ably assisted by a member of the History faculty who serves as a personal academic adviser. All professors in the department hold the PhD in history, are dedicated teachers, and active scholars. Average class size range from 20-30 students, while honors and seminar classes average 10-15 students.
The History Major is at the heart of The Citadel's liberal arts curriculum. Studying civilizations and cultures from throughout the world, from earliest times to the present, provides our students with a better understanding of the evolution of human thought, behavior, and institutions. It develops their ability to conduct research, analyze complex issues, and express themselves logically and effectively.
A degree in History provides students with an excellent preparation for careers in a wide variety of professions including law, the military, journalism, the ministry, business, medicine, archival work, law enforcement, and teaching. For those students who choose to embark upon graduate-level education in history, The Citadel and the College of Charleston jointly offer a Master of Arts degree in history.
