Leader and Innovator: Dr. Solomon is a leader and an innovator in the field of ophthalmology specializing in LASIK and advanced cataract surgery. He plays an active role in training surgeons from all over the world. Since his recruitment to South Carolina from the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1993, he has had the privilege of routinely being the first in South Carolina, and often one of the first in the U.S., to offer the latest technology to his patients while performing groundbreaking procedures for both LASIK and cataract surgery. Today, Dr. Solomon, serving as the medical director of the Carolina Eyecare Research Institute, and his team, continue to lead and innovate as they strive to provide the latest, most advanced technology while helping patients achieve their best visual outcomes. His focus is on helping today’s patients, as well as future generations, see and interact with the world more clearly.

LASIK: Dr. Solomon was instrumental in bringing the first excimer laser (used to perform the first PRK and LASIK procedures) to South Carolina in 1994. In 1996, he made history in South Carolina by performing the state’s first LASIK procedure. Since then he has been the first to perform a number of different vision correction procedures in the state, including custom wavefront treatments in 2002 and bladeless all-laser LASIK in 2004. Most recently, following FDA approval, Dr. Solomon performed the first topography guided LASIK in South Carolina, and in the U.S., in August 2015.

Cataract: Dr. Solomon has been innovating in the field of cataract and refractive cataract surgery, helping to improve the technologies used to remove cataracts as well as helping to evaluate and improve technologies that allow patients to be less dependent on their glasses after their cataract surgeries. As a result of his active research, in 2001 Dr. Solomon made history in South Carolina by performing the first implantation of a multifocal intraocular lens (IOL), which allows a patient to see near and far after his or her cataract surgery. During that same timeframe, Dr. Solomon was the first in the state to implant a toric intraocular lens – a lens designed to treat astigmatism at the time of cataract surgery. He was the first in South Carolina to perform intraoperative wavefront abberometry in 2009 and the first in the world to use the Verion™ Image Guided System in 2014. These technologies are designed to improve the accuracy and precision of cataract outcomes. Additionally, Dr. Solomon performed the first laser-assisted cataract surgery in South Carolina, and one of the first in the U.S., in June 2011.

Active Nationally: Dr. Solomon is active with several national societies. He is currently on the executive committee and serves as President-elect of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), the largest surgical society in the world for cataract and refractive surgery. Dr. Solomon also served as chairman of the ASCRS FDA Committee. In addition, Dr. Solomon serves on the executive committee and he is a founding member for the American and European College of Eye Surgeons (AECOS). His duties have brought him to Capitol Hill to meet with lawmakers on important legislation affecting eye care in this country as well as to work with the FDA.
Giving Back: Dr. Solomon also has a passion for giving back. In 2011, he and two fellow physicians at Carolina Eyecare Physicians created Operation Sight, a nonprofit group that provides cataract surgery free-of-charge. This endeavor has been so successful that Operation Sight has been adopted by ASCRS as part of its domestic initiative with the goal of providing cataract surgery to hundreds and thousands of patients across the country who are in need but cannot afford it.

Educational background: Dr. Solomon’s extensive educational background includes a degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine, an internship at Yale University, residency training in ophthalmology at University of Kentucky Medical Center, an ocular fellowship at Moran Eye Institute at the University of Utah, and advanced surgical training for cataract and LASIK surgery at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He worked at the Medical University of South Carolina, MUSC, Storm Eye Institute for 18 years where he was a professor and recipient of the Arthur and Holly Magill Chair of Ophthalmology. It was at MUSC that he founded the Magill Research Center where among other things, he published a paper that was the definitive worldwide review of the safety and efficacy of LASIK, which has been referred to and used by the FDA.
