Who was Drayton Grant?
Drayton Grant was Winnakee Land Trust's long-time Vice-President, a local attorney who was instrumental in protecting Burger Hill from development and establishing a public place for all to enjoy. When Burger Hill was threatened in the 1990s with suburban-style residential development, Drayton Grant was the driving force who organized the community and enlisted the help of Scenic Hudson to purchase the property, establish the park under the management of Winnakee Land Trust, and organize a group of more than 50 volunteers committed to daily opening, closing, and seasonal maintenance of the park. In 2006, ownership of Burger Hill was transferred from Scenic Hudson to Winnakee Land Trust in recognition of its sound management of the park. In October 2012 Drayton lost a terrible battle with cancer, and her family, friends, acquaintances, and Winnakee Land Trust resolved to rename Burger Hill in her honor.
