Since changes in education take from 3-5 years, we are offering the following plan in conjunction with whatever vision each individual school has for an Honors/GATE program. The plan is a living document and will evolve with the goals of each individual school in providing a viable Honors/GATE program that will meet the needs of the most able learners.
The following is a rough outline of what an individual school plan would look like
YEAR 1
• Program developer will work with the institution to establish Year 1 goals
• Program developer will work directly with the school administrative appointee to establish beginning levels for a GATE/Honors program
• Program developer will work with the school administrative appointee/GATE program director to establish the programs in grades 4/5 or other grade level established by the school to be the starting point.
• Program developer will work with the school at least 1 hour per week in the initial stages of the program development
• Plan for Year 2
YEAR 2
• The program developer will facilitate in the development of a Honors/GATE program in grades 6-8
• The Honors/GATE program will be content based and will eventually lead to teacher teams
• Program developer will work at least 2 hours per month with the teacher teams
• Program developer will offer staff development to all staff interested in offering instruction to Honors/GATE students
• Plan for year 3
YEAR 3
• The Program developer will continue to monitor all aspects of the program
• The Program developer will continue to offer staff development to all staff teaching in the Honors/GATE program.
• The Program developer will meet with GATE team at least once a month and be on call to offer assistance, if needed.
