More about Eenigenburg's Berry Farm - North Farm

Getting to know us: Eenigenburg Berry Farm was on of the earliest Blueberry farms started in Demotte, IN. Mr. John Sauer moved to this area in 1943 and brought with him six blueberry plants from Cedar Lake, IN and that was the beginning of blueberries in this area.

Mr. Sauer became a licensed nurseryman and began to propagate and grow new plants which he planted on his farm and sold to others in the area. One of this who became interested in the blueberries was Ernest Eenigenburg who purchased plants from Mr. Sauer in 1948 and started a farm on the north side of Demotte. That was the beginning of Eenigenburg Berry Farms. In 1956 when Mr. Sauer retired Ernest also bought his farm on the east side of Demotte and this began the businesses that have carried on into the fourth generations.

We are excited about the upcoming 2013 season and have already put a lot of work in to this year's crop. The bushes have all been pruned, the sticks have been hauled out of the patches and the piles have almost all been burned. What a pile of sticks!!!!

The next step was waiting for the buds to open, the bee man brought in the honey bees to do their work along with the natural bumble bees we have and they began their work on all the blossoms. They had a lot of work to do this year cause there were LOTS of blossoms.

The last two years have brought a lot of disasters to the blueberries in this area due to the weather. In June of 2011 a huge wind storm came thru the town of Demotte wiping out thousands of trees and doing a lot of damage to the green berries that were on the bushes. We had a very short season. In 2012 we had a very warm and mild winter that brought on an early spring and early blossoms to the blueberry bushes. Then came the frosts that practically wiped out most of the areas blueberries. So far, this year is looking good and we hope to have a great crop of huge blueberries.
