William F. Ekstrom Library is the central branch of the University of Louisville Libraries system and fundamental to the academic experience on campus. Light-filled and welcoming, Ekstrom offers 24-hour study areas, instruction labs, presentation areas, and tech-savvy spaces that support scholarship.
With extensive collections in the humanities, sciences, and social sciences, Ekstrom serves as the University’s collaborative hub, providing academic support services for students at all levels in the Learning Commons. Located on the 1st Floor East, the Learning Commons includes: Research Assistance and Instruction (RAI) — group instruction and personal assistance with students’ research projects; the Digital Media Suite — help with many types of digital multi-media projects; the REACH Computer Resource Center — assistance with computer applications; and the Writing Center — assistance with all types of writing. On Ekstrom’s 1st Floor West is Access and User Services (AUS), which provides access to collections and many other resources, including Interlibrary Loan and equipment borrowing.
The University Libraries are members of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and, along with Ekstrom, include libraries for Art, Health Sciences, Law, and Music, as well as the Archives and Special Collections. University Libraries hold approximately 2.2 million print volumes, provide full-text electronic access to approximately 90,000 journals, and subscribe to several thousand serials.
